The MesADC-system furnishes an example of a motor system organised in a way not easily compatible with current ideas of alpha-gamma linkage. It is argued that such selective activation can be used experimentally for the functional classification of gamma motoneurons. A technique is described for the selective activation of the MesADC-system. The MesADC-system acts on dynamic gamma motoneurons without any simultaneous effects on static gamma or on alpha motoneurons. The pathway from this region (denoted the mesencephalic area for dynamic control (MesADC-region)) descends ipsilaterally down to the medullary level, sends collaterals to the inferior olivary nuclear complex and then crosses the midline to proceed in the dorsolateral funiculus of the contralateral spinal cord. Knowledge about a system originating in the rubral region in the mesencephalon, possibly from the rostral part of the red nucleus itself, is reviewed in particular. This report deals with supraspinal control of gamma motoneurons.
